The last thing any pregnant woman wants to hear is that they have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. A gestational diabetes diagnosis can seem frightening, but that is often because you are now faced with the unknown and most of us fear the unknown. However, there is really nothing to fear about gestational diabetes as long as you listen to your doctor and nutritionist about using these real solutions for coping with gestational diabetes. Getting a handle on your blood sugar levels early on is important, so educate yourself about what you can do to help keep your blood sugar under control.

Here are some real solutions that you can use to help keep your gestational diabetes under control.

Portion Control – Perhaps the most important thing to remember with gestational diabetes is portion control. Many of us are used to eating three big meals a day, but for women with gestational diabetes those kinds of meals can wreak havoc on blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates and sugars are the main things that these women have to watch out for. Too many carbohydrates and sugars cause your blood sugar levels to do wacky things. Big meals are often loaded with carbohydrates and sugars, even if you don’t realize it. With gestational diabetes, it is important to eat smaller meals more frequently. Most women find that eating three small meals and three snacks throughout their day is perfect for keeping everything under control.

Foods to Eat – Eating the right foods is also an important factor with gestational diabetes. Limiting the number of carbohydrates and sugars is important to keeping your blood sugar under control, which means you have to watch everything that you are consuming. Processed foods are something that you really want to stay away from, so anything out of a box or even packaged food should be avoided. The reason for this is these are often loaded with carbohydrates, think mac and cheese, noodles, or even scalloped potatoes. If you stick to fresh foods it will be easier, especially loading up on vegetables as they are considered a free food. Do not avoid proteins as they help slow down how fast carbohydrates break down. Drinking plenty of water is also important as staying hydrated helps keep blood sugar levels regulated.

Exercise – One thing that doesn’t get as much focus as it should with gestational diabetes is exercise, more women it seems are concerned about what they can and cannot eat. However, exercising is also very important for controlling blood sugar levels. Now this doesn’t mean that you need to go and workout at the gym every day, but it does mean you need to get active. If you are mainly inactive, you will want to start off slow, such as taking a short stroll around the block after dinner and build up from there. Most doctors recommend that you get at least 30 minutes of exercise in a day, but just make sure you are not over doing it.
