Why you cannot always avoid bed rest

Bed rest is one of the trickier aspects to pregnancy, as you never know when or if it will happen to you. Most pregnant women who are put on bed rest are carrying multiples, have a history of miscarriages, or are suffering from some type of pregnancy complication, like preeclampsia or placenta previa. While for some pregnant women, bed rest comes as a relief, for many out there it is not something that they really want. Honestly, I am one of these second types, bed rest is the last thing that I wanted, but I was put on it for two of my pregnancies. Luckily, for me it was towards the end of both pregnancies, so it wasn’t as bad as it could have been.

Is the thought of sitting around doing nothing all day horrible? Are you willing to do just about anything to avoid this punishment of sorts? While there is really no sure fire way to prevent getting put on bed rest there are a few things that you can do to help lower the risk of it happening to you.

Listen to your body – Perhaps the most important piece of advice that can be given in terms of trying to avoid bed rest is to listen to your body. Your body will give you all sorts of signals when you are over doing things; you just have to be listening for them. The worst thing you can do is to push yourself to keep on going. If you are tired, you need to sit down and rest.

Take care of yourself – Not only do you need to get more rest, you also need to take care of your body. Your body is working overtime to grow this baby, so the last thing you want to do is make it work harder by depriving yourself of a healthy diet. You also need to stay hydrated to help keep your body functioning properly. One thing that I found helpful was to use a refillable jug from the hospital for my water. I made sure to drink at least 4 of those a day, every time it was empty I filled it back up and kept it with me at all times to remind myself to drink more.

Ask for help – Many times, we feel that we have to be super mom, but this is not the case. If you are pregnant, especially if you are high risk, it is o.k. to ask for help; even if you’re not pregnant, it is o.k. to ask for help if you need it. If you need help running the kids around call on family or friends to help you out. If they offer help take them up on it, too many women try to do everything on their own just to prove that they can.

Just remember that if you are put on bed rest it is for a very good reason. Doctors usually prescribe bed rest because being in bed is helpful in stopping or slowing down contractions as your body is able to rest rather than having to work so hard to support you and the baby as you are up and around doing things, plus it also helps relax your mind!
